River Ripper – Dam & River Water Filtration System
Due to the high demand for effective river and dam water filtration, we’ve developed a serious solution specifically designed for high-turbidity water conditions.
This system uses four 20” x 4.5” Big Blue housings, all 100% standard size.
Why This System Works
✔ Uses standard 20” x 4.5” cartridges (available Australia-wide)
✔ High-flow performance – no noticeable reduction in flow (until filters require replacement)
✔ Extended carbon contact time for superior contaminant reduction
The system includes:
-
1 × Pleated washable sediment filter (first stage)
-
3 × 10 micron high-density carbon filters
The large volume of carbon ensures strong reduction of:
-
Taste
-
Colour
-
Odour
-
Organic contaminants
Ideal Installation Setup (Recommended)
For best results with dam or river water, we recommend the following configuration:
Step 1 – Pump & Sand Filtration
Pump water from the surface of the dam and run it through a back-flushable sand filter (similar to a swimming pool sand filter).
This will need to be sourced locally.
Step 2 – Holding / Settling Tank
Send water into a small holding tank.
Tip: Deliver water into the tank using a shower-style spray head to help drop clay and heavy sediment out of suspension.
Step 3 – Controlled Flow Through River Ripper
Trickle feed water from the holding tank through the River Ripper at 1–5 litres per minute into your rainwater storage tank.
Install a float switch so when the rainwater tank fills, the system shuts down automatically.
Step 4 – Whole House Protection (Optional extra)
After the pump to the house, install:
Twin Big Blue Basic-Grade System:
Removes sediment, taste, colour and odour.
Followed by:
Whole House UV System: (Optional extra)
Eliminates parasites and harmful microorganisms.
This combination makes the water safe for:
-
Showering
-
Brushing teeth
-
General household use
Step 5 – Drinking & Cooking Water: (Optional extra)
For drinking and cooking, install an under-sink Reverse Osmosis system.
Recommended unit (mid-range, excellent purification with mineral rebalancing):
Important Note on UV Protection
Everything comes down to contact time and turbidity levels.
If you want to eliminate parasites such as:
-
Giardia
-
E. coli
-
Cryptosporidium
You should strongly consider installing UV disinfection.
In some river systems, there may also be industrial or biological contamination. UV sterilisation helps neutralise harmful microorganisms by destroying their DNA.
You can add UV protection from the drop-down menu when ordering.
